How to take care of your hair this summer

5 tips for summer haircare

Summer is coming, that holiday feeling is in the air and we’re all getting a bit excited about having fun in the sun. Although summer often gets a bad rap for playing havoc with hair, the summer months can actually be a blessing for your tresses. Did you know that the sun and heat help stimulate the production of keratin, the protein which makes your hair grow faster? In fact, there’s no better time to grow out an unwanted fringe or layers.

Sadly, it’s not all good news. Overexposure to the sun can certainly damage your hair. And if you’re a beach or pool fan then you’ll also be putting your hair through the stress of chlorine and saltwater, both of which dry out the hair causing breakage and damage.

But don’t despair! There are plenty of ways to protect your hair this summer and ensure it’s glossy, full and healthy.

1. Drench it!

Your hair naturally absorbs any moisture that comes its way. So, when you take a dip in the pool or sea to cool off, your hair soaks up all that chlorine or saltwater. Both chlorine and saltwater have a drying effect on your hair, leaving it rough and prone to breakage. They can also dry out your scalp, causing dandruff. Now of course, you could try and swim without getting your hair wet by tying it up or using a swimming cap, but if you’re just messing around in the water, you probably won’t want to.

A quick tip to protect your hair from chlorine and saltwater is to drench it before you swim. Wet your hair under a shower before you get into the pool, or, if you’re at the beach try taking a water spray with you. Spritz before you swim to reduce the amount of saltwater absorbed. The same goes for after your swim: shower or spritz to rinse out the offending water and keep your hair soft and supple.

2. Use a protective SPF spray for hair

You wouldn’t dream of heading out in the sun without protecting your skin with a decent SPF (I hope not anyway!). Well, the same goes for your hair. There are plenty of good SPF protective sprays for hair on the market these days, so invest in one and use it frequently. Every time you top up your sun protection cream, spray your hair and scalp with an SPF protection for hair too. If you wear your hair in a centre or side parting, ensure you obtain enough coverage along the parting, otherwise you could be in for an unexpected sting. Ouch!

A study in 2019 showed that overexposure to the sun could damage the hair follicle along with the scalp, so it really does make sense to protect it. If you’re not a fan of the sprays then tie your hair back and keep it under a hat when out and about in the sun. This has the added bonus of protecting your face from the sun’s harsh rays too.

3. Be prepared

Forewarned is forearmed: so far, we know that the sun damages your hair and that it helps it to grow, so it makes sense to get a trim just before the summer. Your hair will be in tip top condition and ready to grow. Get rid of split ends and frizz and start with a healthy head of hair. If you’re feeling daring, a shorter cut can keep you cooler, but personally I like to keep my hair long and tie it back.

It will do you no harm to book another visit to the hairdressers at the end of the summer months too, to keep split ends and frizz at bay. To prepare the scalp for your SPF treatment and promote new hair growth after your trim, try using our Bamboo Silicone Scalp Massager before, during and after your trip. It comes in a handy carry case that’s perfect for travel.

4. Keep styling simple

No one wants to be blow drying, straightening or curling their hair excessively when it’s hot outside, so give your hair a break. Master a few simple up-dos to keep your hair looking stylish and out of your way all day long and save the heat styling for special occasions. There are so many gorgeous plaited styles and chignon variations out there, I know you’ll find a couple you love.

5. Lock in moisture

If you’ve read this far then you know the biggest problem with summer hair is that it gets dried out, so think about different ways to lock in moisture. For starters, switch up your shampoo and conditioner. If you’re planning a lot of swimming then pick a swim ‘n’ sun set. If you’re worried about colour fade, find a shampoo and conditioner that prevent it. If it’s just about dryness, then change your usual products to something that’s more moisturising for the warmer months.

Of course, another great way to lock in moisture and care for your scalp is to use Nosheen Hair Oil regularly. Take a look at the list of different natural oils it contains and how they can help both your hair and scalp. Each has its own individual properties, while as a blend they’re incredibly powerful. But don’t just take my word for it, take a look at our customer transformation pictures to see it for yourself.

If you’re off on holiday this summer, don’t forget to pack your Nosheen Microfibre Towel Wrap, along with your hair oil. Our soft, luxurious towel wrap will lock that moisture into your hair after days at the beach or pool and ensure you don’t leave any embarrassing oil patches on your pillowcase.

Whatever you have planned this summer, don’t let bad hair be the reason you don’t do it or duck out of those glowing holiday Insta pics. These simple tips will help keep your hair in good condition this summer, so you can concentrate on what you really should be doing… having fun!

Got any other summer hair care tips to share? If you find one that works for you, I’d love to hear all about it. Wishing you a summer full of sun, sea and wonderful memories…
