Hello lovely readers!
With Halloween, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Guy Fawkes and Diwali celebrations just around the corner, a slew of smoking hot n’ spooky social events from around world are on the social calendar. To avoid your hair looking a fright during trick or treating, Halloween parties or Bonfire Night (unless intentional), read on for our autumnal hair care tips for different hair types, along with some traditional treatments.
There are three main ethnicity hair types: Asian, Afro-Caribbean and Caucasian – of course in our multicultural society there are many different versions and combinations of these.
Asian hair care
Asian hair is often thick, heavy and glossy– qualities that make it prized for use in hair extensions and wig-making. There’s an ancient tradition in South India where religious pilgrims donate their hair as a symbol of sacrifice and purity.
While Asian hair is often very good quality hair, it can have a tendency towards dryness. If you have archetypal Asian hair, you’ll want to pick light, but intensely nourishing products to cleanse your hair. Try a nourishing shampoo and a lightweight conditioner that doesn’t weigh the hair down.
Traditional Tip: Hair oiling has been used to help maintain glossy, healthy locks in Asia for centuries. Coconut oil is the go-to product in many Asian households. However, depending on the geographic region, jasmine oil is also a popular choice and leaves hair subtly perfumed. A divine remedy for post-Diwali hair care!
Afro-Caribbean hair care
Afro-Caribbean hair also has a tendency towards dryness, as well as growing more slowly than other hair types. This means it should be treated with extra care. Afro hair should only be washed every 7 – 10 days, though you might want to wash it more frequently if you lead a very active lifestyle. One very important factor in caring for Afro hair is to eliminate the build-up of product and flakes from the scalp. This helps to keep the scalp healthy and therefore ensure optimal hair health and boost growth.
To cleanse Afro hair of flakes and product build-up, try using regular scalp massage. It will keep your scalp clean and healthy and the massaging action helps to boost circulation and promote hair growth. Our Bamboo Silicone Scalp Massager has soft silicone cones that gently massage your scalp, helping to loosen dead skin and stimulate blood circulation.
Traditional Tip: Indigenous to Africa, the seeds of the baobab tree have collagen-rich properties and are high in omega-3 fatty acid. Baobab oil is perfect for strengthening weak and brittle or dry Afro hair. It’s also great for reducing frizz and protecting hair during the day, and light enough to be added to conditioner to enhance its nourishing properties. For the best results, add a few drops to your daily conditioner. Simple yet effective and perfect for taming frizz after Day of the Dead festivities!
Caucasian hair care
Caucasian hair can be quite varied in texture, from straight or wavy to curly through to very curly or kinky.
Straight hair: If you have straight hair, use a volume-boosting shampoo to prevent your hair from lying flat against your scalp. The thickness of your hair will dictate what type of conditioner you should use. Thicker hair can absorb more moisture-intensive conditioners, while finer hair needs a lightweight conditioner, to prevent it from being weighed down. As fine Caucasian hair is especially delicate, try using a silk pillowcase, which will help to prevent breakage while you sleep. As a bonus they’re also great for your skin, helping to banish those wrinkles and crow’s feet.
Wavy hair: If you have wavy hair, then moisturising products are your perfect hair care ally, as they tend not to weigh down wavy tresses. Hair masks are also a great treatment for wavy hair and should be used every other week.
Curly hair: Curly Caucasian hair can be challenging to maintain, as it has a tendency to become dry. To prevent this, aim to wash your hair just once or twice a week, and use shampoos and conditioners that are specifically formulated for curly hair. Detangle your hair while it’s still wet, using a wide-toothed comb or brush. Our Hair Care Collection contains a bamboo paddle brush, which is perfect for taming unruly curly locks when wet.
People with curly hair should try to avoid haircare products containing drying ingredients such as alcohol, as well as products such as hair mousse, hair gel and hairspray. Instead, opt for products specifically created for curls.
Very curly hair: If your hair is very curly or kinky, you may need to use trial and error to identify which products do and don’t work for you. The key to caring for very curly or kinky hair is hydration. Use a shampoo for curly hair and an intensely moisturising conditioner. A moisturising mask should be used regularly. Products such as finishing creams and hair oils can lock in moisture and define your curls, while a lightweight pomade is good for styling.
Traditional Tip: If hair oil is your choice of product, kitchen cupboard staples such as avocado oil and olive oil work well for Caucasian hair. Traditionally used in Latin America, castor oil, aloe vera, 2 eggs and lemon juice make a lush hair mask that can be used to boost shine. Alternatively, a traditional treatment from the Mediterranean: pick a few sprigs of lavender from your garden, macerate lightly and steep it in olive oil, for a fragrant hair oil – it’s so relaxing! Perfect for eliminating smoky residue from your hair after Guy Fawkes night.
